Key Source International Lands $2.9 million Contract To Supply Tandy's Radio Shack Stores
HAYWARD, Calif. - - The Wombat Jr. Point of Sale keyboard has been selected by Tandy Information Systems of Fort Worth, Tex., for use in its $75 million upgrade of its Radio Shack and Computer City stores to a "state of the art" retail information system.
Integral in this upgrade is the Wombat Jr. POS keyboard. Tandy selected Key Source over four other vendors for the project largely because it was able to design and deliver a custom product that fit Tandy's requirements and in a time frame that met the deadline of its implementation of the Point of Sale retail system. "The design criteria was simple - to make the keyboard fit in the space available, but have no fewer than 130 custom colored programmable keys and a minimum of 6 to 10 years life in the field," said Phil Bruno, vice president of sales & marketing for Key Source. The result was the Wombat Jr. POS Keyboard, which features 141 fully programmable key stations and a three-track magnetic card reader for credit cards and drivers' licenses.
Retailers are increasingly using the driver's license to capture demographic information, as well as to verify identity. Another important factor, said Bruno, is that "they can now train a sales associate in three working days under actual sales conditions instead of the three weeks required with the old system and keyboard."
"The extended number of keys, the fact that they programmable, the small footprint, and the rugged design make this a natural selection for us at Tandy" states Bill Klucher, manager of retail store systems at Tandy Corporation. The Wombat Jr. POS keyboards are available in all-standard Western languages and have the CE agency approval. Standard items include a DOS programming utility and Windows NT 3.51 Drivers.
Key Source International will not only sell standard versions of the Wombat Jr., but can develop custom versions. Manufacturer's suggested retail price for the standard version is $425.
